As we mark 25 years since September 11, 2001, we remember those who were killed, those who survived, the first responders who acted with courage, the families who continue to carry loss, and all who served their communities in the days and years that followed.

Important: September 11, 2001 was a physical terrorist attack — it was not a cyberattack. This lesson explores how the response to that day changed national security, and how those changes helped shape the cybersecurity practices we rely on today.

Before and After 9/11

What happened, briefly

On September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists affiliated with the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two were flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, one struck the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., and one crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back. 2,977 people were killed, and thousands of first responders and ordinary people acted with extraordinary courage to help others evacuate and survive.

The attacks were not a cyberattack — no computers or networks were hacked. But the scale of the tragedy, and the discovery that warning signs had not been connected across agencies, led the United States to rebuild how it shares information, protects infrastructure, and prepares for future threats, including digital ones.
